Arrested Development (sad but cheap)

Posted on Tuesday 15 November 2005

Yes, it’s sad that Arrested Development was cancelled.

Yes, it’s been one of the funniest shows on TV in the last few years.

Yes, Fox needs better marketing and needs to stop cancelling their best shows.

But that’s several-day-old news at this point. Right now, my big dilemma is this: do I buy seasons 1 and 2 of Arrested Development on DVD to show my support for the show, or do I not buy them because I don’t want to give Fox any money as some kind of reward for cancelling it?

Now, obviously I want the DVDs. This show is probably one of the most rewatchable shows around. It doesn’t hurt that I missed a good chunk of season one when it first aired.

Well, Amazon managed to answer that one for me. Ok, so they didn’t really answer the real question, but they’re offering such a great deal on both seasons that I didn’t really have any choice but to buy them both. If you head on over to either season of Arrested Development, and then click on the title to get the details page, here’ll be a link to buy both seasons and save $10. That works out to $31.94 for both, which is by far the cheapest you’ll find it. (If not, let me know!)

And since I use the Amazon Visa, I pretty much always have some $25 gift certificates sitting around from buying things with the Visa card, so it came out to be a pretty cheap buy.

And then they went and offered me a free trial of Amazon Prime, so I wound up getting free 2nd day shipping. Hooray for Arrested Development!

By the way, any comments about my initial conundrum that kind of fell by the wayside when I saw the cheapness? Is it better to buy the DVDs and show support for the show (that is, after all, the kind of thing that helped bring back Family Guy) or is it just a bad idea to reward Fox by giving them our money after they cancel all these great shows?

I was already leaning towards it being best to buy the DVDs, even before the cheap bit happened, but I’m curious to see if anyone else has thought about this and has a good answer.
