Wow, GMail’s been down for about 5 minutes now. That’s not something you see every day.
If you try use it it sits there for a minute or two (I guess some back-end connection has to time out) and then you get an error:
Server Error
The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your [...]
Well, it looks like the tech that replaced the line to the house was right about that being the problem. It’s been up almost all the time since he did that about 3 weeks ago. I have no idea why no other Comcast techs could figure that out, though.
Now, there’ve been other issues [...]
I finally got around to setting up Google sitemaps on my DVD commentary database and review site. It was a lot easier than I was expecting. A lot of the sitemap structure is optional, so I just ignored things like the last modified date field when first setting it up.
Once I got it [...]
Ok, I just hit the most frustrating and confusing bug I’ve ever seen in Firefox, while trying to post my last Nikon D70/Canon Rebel XT comparison post.
I had been hitting “save and continue editing” in WordPress while writing it up. Eventually I was ready, and clicked on “Publish”. Nothing happened. I tried [...]
I’ve been thinking about getting a digital SLR camera, and I’m writing this up to summarize my opinions based on using both the D70 and Rebel XT for a while. Hopefully this might help other people make some decisions. If you don’t want to read about how I narrowed it down to those [...]
This is a new one. I’ve been using “Blockbuster Online”, Blockbuster’s DVD-by-mail service to compete with Netflix, for a while now. I just got a DVD that was sent from an actual Blockbuster B&M video store, not one of their regular distribution centers. Instead of having a regular postage-paid return envelope, it [...]
The most unexpected thing to me about the gas prices isn’t how much they’re going up, it’s how quickly they’re changing. We started around $2.59 before Katrina. Wednesday night most stations were around $2.99. After that, at the one station that I go past the most:
Thursday afternoon: $3.18
Friday afternoon: $3.38
Friday evening: $3.74
Up [...]
I’ve had a few hits for people searching for the New Orleans police and national guard scanner audio stream, so here’s a link to the wiki where people are listing all the audio stream mirrors.
While pingomatic’s down: pingoat. Just switched Wordpress over to use it instead.
I’d like to include them both, but then if they’re both up I’ll be pinging everyone twice, which seems like a bad idea. Maybe some kind of failover system: try ping service 1, if that fails, go on to number 2…
Some relatively reliable things that I haven’t heard in the media:
Soldier shot at the Superdome. Heard this live last night on the New Orleans police scanner MP3 stream. Shot in the leg, one person apprehended. It should be reliable news if the police and/or national guard (not sure who) were discussing it [...]
